Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes

Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes

Did you ever have Manwich sloppy joes growing up?

Well move on over Manwich, there’s a new Sloppy Joe in town!

These slow cooker sloppy joes are fresh and savory.  If a recipe doesn’t use canned sauce then there is usually about 1 cup of ketchup involved.  Instead, I use Muir Glen with no salt added fire-roasted diced tomatoes.

Traditionally canned sloppy joe sauce contains high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, and sugar.  The fire-roasted tomatoes in this recipe have no sugar added.  To sweeten the recipe up a bit I used 1 1/2 TBSP of brown sugar.  I personally am not a fan of overly sweet sloppy joes.

In this recipe, I also used ground turkey.  While I occasionally eat ground beef and red meat, it’s usually only on my menu once per week.  I actually prefer ground turkey over ground beef in most cases besides burgers.  Ground lean turkey can be used for burgers, meatballs, meatloaf, in pasta sauce, tacos, etc.

Are you saying I should avoid red meat?

Not necessarily.  Red meat contains some vital nutrients such as iron, zinc, vitamin B12, B6, selenium, and high in protein.  Although the quality of meat, in general, is of concern.  If you would like a more in-depth post on red meat or meat consumption in general regarding health let me know!

In the meantime, I have for you a lighter yet tastier version of slow cooker sloppy joes.   Sloppy joes are a popular game day choice that will make a great addition to your Super Bowl gatherings this weekend.
